My web sites receive visitors from many different sources including article directories, forums, blogs, and search engines. But some of the best traffic I receive comes from a source most people don't take full advantage of: Yahoo Answers. Think about it. If someone is going to Yahoo Answers and asking questions on a given topic that means they have a need. Now it could just be a curiosity they have that needs satisfying. But more times than not they have a problem that needs fixing. And if you position yourself as an expert who can help them solve their problem then you can get them to visit your web site, subscribe to your newsletter, or buy your product.
You can actually pull this off pretty easily because these are visitors who are already in the buying mood, or are at least pretty close to it. By asking a question on YA they've already demonstrated that they're willing to take action in order to solve their problem. It doesn't take much of a nudge to convince them to take the action you want.
For example, say you have a web site that reviews different types of computer hardware and software. You see someone asking a question about spyware removers. They're getting lots of popups and their computer is slow because its infested with spyware. They want to clean up their computer but don't know which is the best program to use.
Since you're an expert in this niche you can give them some tips for keeping their computer free of spyware. You can also warn them that many of the free spyware removers available are really scams that actually install spyware themselves. Then as your source you leave a link back to a page on your own site that discusses and compares spyware removers. Now anyone with a spyware problem will read your helpful answer and visit your site for more information on how to clean up their own computers.
