This is the very first thing to be done - keyword research. Google's FREE keyword research tool AdWords Keyword Tool External is by far the best free keyword research tool in the market.
First determine the niche you are targeting. Enter the niche and let the system throw up some good keywords. Try to find keywords at-least 2 words long. Long tailed keywords ( 3 or more words) are easy to target and rank for.
For ex: if I am targeting "burglar systems", I prefer ones like "Home burglar systems". This has 2600 searches ad is ultra targeted as well.
I would also look for keywords having buy in them. Such people want to buy stuff and so they might buy from my website.
SEO Tip 2
Titles
Title are very important to get traffic. I would suggest using your keyword in the title. For eg: "Home Burglar Systems Are Not a Luxury Any More"
SEO Tip 3
BackLinks
Get Lots of Backlinks to your website. These are high quality links for related sites linking back to your site. Make sure you have a link to your website with the keyword in the anchor text.
For Ex: home alarm systems

Directory Submissions
Submit your site to directories in the category relevant to your niche. Try to find ones which have a PR of 3 or more. You can use the SEO Quake plug-in for Firefox to find the PR of a site and much more information.

Article Marketing
Write good informative articles and submit them to directories like EzineArticles. These will send you swarms of targeted traffic.
